Transportation

Inadequate and aging transportation infrastructure is inhibiting Ontario’s economic competitiveness.

What's this about?
Transportation affects people’s everyday lives—it also plays an important role in Ontario’s economic growth and development. Ontario has a significant transportation infrastructure deficit, which is resulting in increased congestion and decreased business productivity. Ontario’s transportation infrastructure requires major new investments to overcome existing constraints. For decades, governments of all stripes have under-invested in transportation infrastructure, particularly in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA). The resulting congestion in the region costs $6 billion in lost productivity annually.
Our Goal
Our goal is to work with government to build effective transportation networks that help spur economic growth and job creation.
OUR POSITION
Building a comprehensive transportation network requires the government to work with municipalities, the private sector, and the federal government to plan and fund major infrastructure projects. We believe government should:
  • Leverage private sector capital and expertise through private-public partnerships (P3s) and alternative financing and procurement (AFP). The private sector has proven that it can design and build major infrastructure projects on budget and on time.
  • Make the development of transportation infrastructure in the Ring of Fire a priority. Costs need to be shared between federal, provincial, and municipal governments and their private sector partners.
  • Invest in transportation infrastructure in the GTHA. Establish new revenue tools, but ensure that they are dedicated and transparent.
