GTA West Corridor Crucial for Growth and Economic Development in Ontario

In response to the Ministry of Transportation’s latest infrastructure development strategy for the GTA West region, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) has prepared a formal submission outlining the importance of a new GTA West corridor in order to foster growth and economic development in Ontario.

Transportation will play an important role in Ontario’s growth and economic development in the next 30 years.  The draft GTA West Transportation Development Strategy indicates that the demand for travel will exceed the capacity of the existing regional transportation network by 2031. The results would be increased congestion, economic constraints, higher fuel consumption and air pollution, and a lower quality of life.

The OCC made a number of recommendations to the Ministry of Transportation intended to strengthen the GTA West transportation network for regional and provincial businesses:

    1)  Expand the geographic boundaries of the study to include surrounding areas such as Brantford, Cambridge, Guelph, and Kitchener‐Waterloo.

    2)  Consult with transportation authorities, including undertaking an independent review of the benefits and impacts of consolidating the GTHA’s municipal public transportation networks under one regional transportation authority.

    3)  Expand the GTA West’s project plan range from its current 25 years to 30 years.
